Singapore - a City in a Garden

This film was made for Singapore National Parks Department

Singapore 1

Singapore today. Almost 5 million people live and work here. The luxuriant greenery that Singapore now enjoys is no accident of nature: it’s the result of visionary investment by a far-sighted government. It took 40 years of strong political will, sweat and toil to make the vision a reality.

Singa 2

When Singapore’s “Garden City” vision made its appearance in the 1960s, the aim of integrating the environment with development went beyond merely benefiting citizens, or conserving nature. The initial Garden City idea that has shaped independent Singapore for 40 years was devised to bring practical economic benefits. Its trees and parks would be living symbols of order in an unstable part of the world. They would be a vivid demonstration of First World standards in a third world region - a “clean and green state” that would attract the international investment necessary for the state’s growth.

Singa Roads

The work is not yet at an end. Singapore’s Garden City is still thriving – evolving into a City in a Garden - a model for the new millennium.
